The Oddbins Take

They Say

Based on the idyllic coast of the Dornoch Firth, Balblair has been making whisky since 1790 and is unique in that, instead of ageing for set periods of time, Distillery Manager John MacDonald selects whiskies when he deems them to be ready, and so they are labelled with the year in which the whisky was laid down. The American oak and ex-bourbon barrels used to age the 2005 maturation impart toffee, leather and vanilla notes, which are punctuated with flavours of apricots, oranges and spice.

We Say

This first release, non chill-filtered whisky is still is Balbalir’s most recent vintage to hit the market and it is full of the joys of youth, with bright flavours of citrus fruits, chocolate and orange. Alter Ego: Matt Smith; a young star that is shining bright already with its idiosyncratic, chiselled charisma and if you step inside for one moment, who knows where it might take you…

This Highland Single Malt was first released in 2013 and has a natural colour and is non-chill filtered. Maturation in American oak, more precisely in ex-bourbon barrels, provides notes of toffee, butterscotch and vanilla. On the nose one detects lemon, orange and honey, which also make up the long-lasting finish together with a hint of spice.
