The Oddbins Take

There was a time that Australian Chardonnay was pretty much the world’s house white. Now received opinion would more generally have it that it’s over ripe, over oaked and these days, with the strength of the Aussie dollar, over priced. In other words, just plain over. But that received opinion might just be due for revising with a new wave of Oz Chardonnay set to wash away lazy assumptions. Lighter, fresher, completely unoaked and great value: this is a cracking example of what a modern Australian Chardonnay can be.

Bob and Cherie Berton set up the Berton Vineyard in the High Eden subregion of Barossa in 1996. Due to a lack of water for a couple of years it took a while for the vines to really flourish, but now these hardy little vines are producing some incredible grapes. This wine was one of the first wines that Berton produced and is therefore one that they, and we, are very proud of.
