The Oddbins Take

Rodent racing was an incredibly popular spectacle in Bellefontaine, Ohio. However, a sad day befell the town in 1843, when a Frenchman named Edmond rode into town.

With a Gallic flourish he bet his life’s savings on a three-legged albino rat called Roger. Quite to the locals’ dismay, the rank outsider romped home and Edmond left the town bankrupt. Returning to France, he set up a Champagne house with his winnings, dedicated to the Best Rat of Bellefontaine.

The exquisite Besserat de Bellefon Blanc de Blancs is a celebration of Roger’s snow white fur and finesse. Some of this is not true.

The Wine Gang, Report February 2014: "As you will have gathered from the name (as distinct from the entertaining tall tale on Oddbins' website) this is an all-Chardonnay Champagne whose lemony aromatic freshness leads into a rich and full-flavoured mousse with undertones of apple and peach and a lively incisive, mineral tang on the finish."

In 1930, the owner of the famous Paris restaurant "La Samaritine de Luxe" issued a unique challenge; that "if [anyone can create the perfect Champagne for food I will buy a thousand bottles…" Besserat de Bellefon created its Cuvee des Moines and won the business.

"In the pursuit of excellence that could satisfy the most demanding clientele, Victor Besserat developed the Cuvee des Moines using a unique process. The result was, and is, an amazingly delicate Champagne, with a silky mousse and a fine bead that seems to rise to the surface in a fine foam as soon as it is poured into a glass. Since it was founded in 1843, Besserat de Bellefon has remained true to its traditions, creating Champagne solely for the finest restaurants, hotels, wine cellars and wine merchants.

The Blanc des Blancs is made from 100% Chardonnay, with 10-25% of reserve wines. It has four years on the lees and is given a dosage of 9 g/l. It does not undergo malolactic fermentation.

With a bright lemon appearance and a persistent necklace of bubbles, it has a pronounced apple and citrus aromas overlaid with more developed toasty. On the palate it is medium-bodied, with intense fruit and farmyard-y undertones and crisp acidity. It has a long finish with a pleasant creamy mouth feel.
