The Oddbins Take

This could well be the fullest of the new red Burgundies in our mid-price range, but only by a smidgen. All those from the excellent Domaine d'Ardhuy situate themselves on the lighter more thoughtful side of Burgundy, but this is the one to choose if you want a touch more body and juice. Ripe and silky this has stability and roundness but retains a definite "femininity". A curvy size 12 to the waifish size 8 of some of its lighter housemates.

Two vineyard parcels produce this wine, Les Coquines and Le Chaignot, the latter boasting vines that are fifty years old. Both are planted on low slopes covered in gravel and limestone soils. Grapes are hand-picked, then sorted, crushed and completely de-stemmed. Fermentation and maceration last approximately two weeks, with regular punching down. After pressing the free-run and press wines are blended and left to mature in large oak vats or ‘foudres’ for the next year. The wine is bottled after only a light filtration.
