The Oddbins Take

Montalcino is one of those staggering quaint, historic, sun-drenched hill top towns that give Tuscany its unique flavour. Brunello di Montalcino is one of those reds that give Italy such a glimmering reputation for incredible, food-friendly wines.

In 1967, Giovanni Sacchet, co-founder and winemaker at Carpineto, fell in love with Tuscany and its wines, and made it his life’s mission to produce modern, world class wines here. His Brunello is big, firm and tight, with flavours of liquorice, raspberries and vanilla.

Carpineto was founded in 1967 by Antonio Zaccheo and Giovanni Sacchet, who now own 424 hectares of prime vineyards in the Chianti and Montalcino areas. Their aim is simple: to produce modern, world class Chianti and Brunello dI Montalcino.

Giovanni Sacchet was born in northeast Italy and studied oenology at Congliano. He met Antonio Zacchero, fell in love with Tuscany and promptly founded Carpineto in 1967.

Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled vats and maceration on the skins lasts for 16 days. The wine is aged in Slovenian oak barrels for 36 months, followed by six months in the bottle.

This is an iconic Brunello. Dry, warm and well textured, with a lingering bouquet reminiscent of liquorice, raspberries and vanilla. It has a long, firm finish. One to decant.
