The Oddbins Take

This little gem is really, really worth knowing about. There is a distinctive style of fresh, sea-licked, zesty-white in Galicia that, frankly, makes us wildly excited. We defy anyone who serves this wine with some simply-cooked seafood and a dose of sunshine, to not fall in love, ditch their current boyfriend/girlfriend/mates/dog and move to Spain to shack up with Martin Codax. To know it is to love it.

The Martin Codax winery was set up by 270 local winemakers and growers in 1986. Mr Codax, however, was a mediaeval troubadour whose poems are the oldest recorded in the Galician-Portuguese language. Burgáns is the name of the hillside in the Salnés Valley where their Albariño is grown and produced. The wine undergoes cool fermentation and four months ageing on its lees in stainless steel in order to preserve the bright aromatics of the variety.
