Veuve Clicquot at Oddbins

Champagne Veuve Clicquot first donned its infamous yellow label in 1877 but the House had been making the notorious drink long before then. Their story is one of a formidable woman who stood strong in what was a man’s world; Madame Clicquot. Born in 1777 as the daughter of a Baron, she went on to marry Francois Clicquot, the son of the Maison Clicquot founder, in 1798. Francois shared his passions and knowledge for champagnes with his young wife, which allowed her to take the reins following his untimely death in 1805.

Taking on this role at the head of the champagne house was a bold move for Madame Clicquot during a time when women were not included in the business world. But she took it in her stride and with passion, determination and innovation, she helped shape the champagne world as we now know it. A mere 5 years after her husband’s death, she created the first vintage champagne ever recorded in the region. She also invented the riddling table, a tool still used today to guarantee a crystal-clear wine. And she didn’t stop there! In 1818, Madame Clicquot created the first ‘Rosé D’Assemblage’ by blending some of her red wines with the champagne. – we’ll raise a toast to that!
