CHAMPAGNE

Legend dictates that sparkling wine has been being made in Champagne since 1692, when Dom Perignon made it by accident. In fact, most historians agree that, that date is much more likely to be 1531, without the aid of monsieur Perignon. Regardless, Champagne is a region that is more renowned than Batman, Superman and the skull of Yorick combined. Alas, poor Batman! I knew him Horatio. In fact, it might be too well known; for people do tend to announce that they brought Champagne, while waving about a bottle of Italian sparkling. It’s probably unnecessary; you seem sharp as a whip, but let’s just quantify what we mean by good old Champagne. It must be grown in the French Region of Champagne, bottle fermented and aged on the lees (dead yeast) for at least 12 months. So, you won’t find anything that doesn’t meet those criteria on this page, that’s good, ay?

    £27.00

This boutique and thoroughly modern Champagne is proof that it's possible to invest in the future and still have fun now. Bernard Remy bought his first vineyard in 1968; it has gradually grown to about the size of ten football pitches and has been passed on to his son Rudy.

Rudy makes this new zippy, limey and floral Champagne exclusively for Oddbins under his son's name because he sees this wine as their future and Antoine as the heir to the throne. So with each sip you enjoy you will be investing in little Antoine's future.

They say great things come in small packages. We beg to differ. This magnum sized bottle, for example, contains a liquid so toasty, rounded and complex a standard size simply wouldn't be enough!

"I drink it when I'm happy and when I'm sad. Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I'm not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise, I never touch it-unless I'm thirsty." Wise words said by Lilly Bollinger, the great granddaughter-in-law of House of Bollinger founder Jacques Joseph, and head of the family firm from 1941-77.*

    £15.00

Our French is rudimentary, but we think that Canard-Duchêne roughly translates as "duck of oak". And we believe this to be a reference to how this elegant Champagne conquered the UK.

The people of Ludes, near Reims, deposited an enormous wooden Trojan-duck at customs in Folkestone. The duck was filled to the brim with Champagne bottles, and when local customs officers wheeled it in, the trap door sprung open and bottles flew out, making their way up the M20 towards London.

The rest is history. However, our understanding may not be historically factual.

Our French is simple, however we feel that Canard-Duchêne generally interprets as "duck of oak". Furthermore, we trust this to be a reference to how this exquisite Champagne vanquished the UK.

The general population of Ludes, close Reims, kept a huge wooden Trojan-duck at traditions in Folkestone. The duck was filled to the overflow with Champagne bottles, and when neighborhood traditions officers wheeled it in, the trap entryway sprung open and jugs flew out, advancing up the M20 towards London. The rest is history.

In any case, our comprehension may not be truly genuine.

The warming cinnamon and nutmeg spice, coupled up with the vibrant energy of the red cherries, rose petals and wild strawberries make this rosé Champagne as close to a Moroccan rose garden at dusk, as it's possible to get. Just add a few wisps of shisha smoke, drifting over from the corner, where some elderly gentlemen ponder over a leisurely of chess, and you've pretty much conjured the tastes going on in this mesmeric, gentle and perfumed Champagne.

Since 1921, Dom Pérignon has more or less defined the term ‘vintage champagne’, not least because they only make vintage champagne. It is also because DP is only produced in years where the grape harvest will deliver something outstanding, which means that only roughly half of the past 100 or so vintages have been declared.

No wonder it’s been a favourite of Marilyn Monroe, James Bond and countless other figures of repute… real and fictional. With its flavours of delicate marzipan and cocoa, finessed peach and white apricot and, finally, decadent, spicy notes that go on and on, you, like Dom Pérignon, may just exclaim ‘come quickly – I am tasting the stars’!

When Champagne gets this good, it's time to ask not what your Champagne can do for you, but what you can do for your Champagne. How best can you set off its hazelnut, lemon and fig charms? How might you complement its subtle, diffuse mousse?

What canapés might you serve with it and to whom should you serve it to? These are big questions, and this is a big Champagne. In fact, the only thing that isn't big about it is the price.

You might think you're familiar with the story of John the Baptist, but you probably don't know the truth. When Herod's daughter demanded John's head on a salver after dancing for her father - he being pleased enough to offer anything she wanted in return - Herod was horrified. 'Why on a plate?' he thought.

Fearing his little girl wanted to consume the bonce, he had his chefs build a fake head. Pork and chicken skin. Quails eggs for eyes... surely the ruse would be obvious. However, the 'head' was served with a mesmerising champagne, the sheer distraction of which took the girl's attention from what was really on the plate. Interestingly, the bubbles went beautifully with the nibbles too.

But what to choose to avoid the clichéd and eschew the bling? How about Krug Grande Cuvee, with its blend of up to 120 vintage wines making it not only utterly fabulous, but taking it 'beyond the concept of vintage'? Special enough for you? Special enough for us, for any (grand) occasion.

Laurent-Perrier Rosé is not so much a Champagne as an adored institution. The delightfully squat, curvaceous bottle has something to do with its charm, admittedly, but it is, of course, the juice inside that has led to such acclaim.

Made with 100% Pinot Noir, Laurent-Perrier Rosé has a soft, dreamy texture and a ripe, almost baked strawberry and a vanilla-laced cream that are make this libation quite, quite magical. It’s not sweet though – oh no – this is beautiful Brut is sweet enough…

The nose has delicate aromas of citrus fruits, underpinned by hints of white flowers. A perfect balance between freshness and finesse, the palate is full-bodied, complex and creamy, displaying great length on the finish.

Moët & Chandon: probably the most famous and instantly recognisable name in the wine world. Freddie Mercury told us that the Killer Queen was “well versed in etiquette” and “extraordinarily nice” and she kept her Moët & Chandon in a pretty cabinet.

With its deep peach, apple, brioche, toasted nut and vanilla flavours, we prefer to keep ours in the fridge at all times so that we can open some at the drop a hat for even the tiniest of celebrations. Where do you keep yours?

The ultimate groupies' Champagne, one can imagine this being enjoyed and passed around between members of a larger circle of friends, with lots of conversation of the slightly louder variety.

Made for the close-at-hand ice bucket,...in the back of a limousine, would be perfect,...on the way to a nightclub, even better,...on a Saturday night, better still again,...Moët is likely to be on hand for many such scenarios as that's the Champagne it is. Fun, fresh, lively with good depth and a nice vanilla note to finish.

A fine young gent who goes by the name Vanilla Ice asked us to ‘check out the hook while his DJ resolved it… Ice ice baby.’ Unfortunately, having never attended the Gelato Grammar School for the consummately Hip Hop, we have no idea what this means. He maybe repeating his own last name, perhaps he is trying to court the White Witch from the Chronicles of Narnia, but we like to think he was pre-empting the arrival of a new Champagne drinking experience.

Moët Ice Impérial is the first and only Champagne especially created to be enjoyed over ice. It is fun, fresh and fruity; ideal to serve in the sun over ice with or without garnish, while remaining true to the Moët & Chandon style. This Vanilla chap has excellent taste in summer beverages!

But any worries, we imagine, would have been instantly allayed when they sampled the 2006: it is simply lovely.

It is intense yet delicate, with balanced notes of stone fruit, acacia honey and citrus underpinned by a fine thread of acidity. It has excellent freshness and persistence and its tight structure is showing beautifully right now.

Ruinart is not a call to write on a Rothko, paint over a Banksy or put a traffic cone on a statue; it's the oldest Champagne house. Established in 1729, the first delivery of "wine with bubbles" left the house in January 1730. More than 280 years later, this squat little bottle, inspired by the 18th Century bottles, has become one of the most recognisable and sought after sparkling wines in the world. And this half sized bottle is even more squat that the original! The Ruinart Rosé is a real accomplishment: smooth as silk and crisp as morning dew, with red berries, fresh flowers and gentle spices.

Now, whilst we're not saying Veuve makes you virile (though that is a catchy line), we are saying that the label correctly signifies the brilliance within: rich yet dry, mousse-y yet elegant, yeasty yet citrusy, it's one healthy animal.
