The Oddbins Take

So beautiful is this wine, that grown men and women have been known to drop to their knees and weep, not quite knowing what to do with all the silky, supply, velvety liquid that is contained in this bottle.

They just weren’t prepared for the red cherry and plum purity, the oceanic depths of pure fruit, and the sweet mint and myriad spices that danced across their palates like elves in a forest. They just weren’t ready. Are you?

Château La Garde was bought in June 1990 by Dourthe. It is situated on an exceptional terroir, one of the finest gravel outcrops in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, producing wonderfully long lived, vibrant wines with a ripe juicy core and full body.

The origins of the Château date back to the 18th century, when Domaine de “Lagarde” already featured on the “carte de Cassini”, the first general map of France drawn by the Cassini family in 1756. The picturesque Charterhouse, built in 1732, was at that time surrounded by valleys and woods.

2005 was an exceptional vintage. Rarely in the Bordeaux wine history have all the conditions been in place for a harvest of such ideal quality. In completely stress-free conditions, the teams of grape-pickers at Château La Garde gathered grapes that were very healthy and rich, with concentrated colour and tannins, good balanced acidity bringing freshness and with remarkable aromatic intensity. The very favourable final ripening period had just enough rainfall to ensure ideal conditions for staggering the harvests. Picking took place during the coolest hours so as to keep all the exceptional aromatic intensity. Vinification takes place plot by plot according to the different terroirs, with sustainable viticulture employed throughout the vineyard. Dourthe use natural and controlled-cover crops. The vines are de-budded; they undergo one to two leaf-thinnings and one to two crop-thinnings depending on the vintage conditions.

Winemaker Guillaume Pouthier has worked at Châteaux La Garde since 1999, helping it to rise to the forefront of the appellation.

In the winery there are stainless steel vats with temperature control and two 40 hl wooden vats and 8 oak barrels (400l). Ageing takes place in an arched underground cellar with air-conditioning. Good cooperage and oak selection are combined when choosing the barrels so that they are best suited to the characteristics and style of Château La Garde's wines.
