The Oddbins Take

Bordeaux? Old man's wine, isn't it? Drunk mainly by old duffers in gentlemen's clubs or young fogeys aspiring to be old duffers. Well, maybe, but this 2006 Cotes de Francs, with it's clean, modern, minimalist label hints that, as with any stereotype, that's hardly the whole story. And, while old duffers in gentlemen's clubs may not know what an i-pod is, or if they do, think that having Coldplay on one might be considered cutting edge, they do often know a thing or two about wine. Never mind fogeys, hipsters, even Coldplay, here's a wine everyone can appreciate.

Just a few kilometres east of Saint Emilion, in the historical village of Francs, opposite the birthplace of the influential Renaissance writer Montaigne, the Château Marsau wines command one of the highest points of the Côtes de Bordeaux-Francs appellation. The excellent clay-limestone soil is perfect for the Merlot grape, and the wine is made exclusively of this grape.
