The Oddbins Take

,Aria [ahr-ee-uh]. Noun. Def: an elaborate melody sung solo with an accompaniment… This is a fitting name and the definition exactly encapsulates this joyous Chianti. With the invigorating fresh red fruit as the solo melody, the accompaniment takes the form of dried herbs and a hint of graphite. And, as it goes, the ticket price for this star performer is a lot less than a night at the opera. Just chuck on a bit of Verdi and enjoy the show!

Since 1990 the Gioffreda family has invested energy and passion into Casa al Vento, in the area of Gaiole in Chianti (Siena), in order to give the property its former prestige. In more recent years a new challenge has emerged with the development of wine and olive oil production and the growth of Sangiovese, Merlot and Alicante Bouchet grapes. The vines spring up on the steep slopes of the hills that surround the Borgo, at around 450 metres above sea level, embraced by the sun and caressed by the breeze.

They use environmentally-friendly production techniques and great care is taken to preserve the quality of the grapes, from the pruning of the vines to the selection of the grapes on the selection table.

The wine cellar is an authentic jewel of rural architecture. Nestled in the hilly landscape, its heart is the fermentation room, made up of stainless steel tanks and oak barrels that store about 400 hectoliters in temperature-controlled surroundings. The vaulted barrel cellar contains 90 barrels of French oak for the wine to mature.

The Sangiovese vines are grown using the spurred cordon training system and are harvested by hand in early October.
