The Oddbins Take

Since 1921, Dom Pérignon has more or less defined the term ‘vintage Champagne’, not least because they only make vintage Champagne. It is also because DP is only produced in years where the grape harvest will deliver something outstanding, which means that only roughly half of the past 100 or so vintages have been declared. No wonder it’s been a favourite of Marilyn Monroe, James Bond and countless other figures of repute… real and fictional. With its flavours of delicate marzipan and cocoa, finessed peach and white apricot and, finally, decadent, spicy notes that go on and on, you, like Dom Pérignon, may just exclaim ‘come quickly – I am tasting the stars’!

Dom Pérignon is one of the most renowned Champagnes there and it owes its name and much of its prestige to the 17th century monk of the same name who is commonly, but erroneously credited with the invention of sparkling wine, which wasn’t popularised until 200 years after his death.

Today it is owned by, and is the prestige cuvee of Moët & Chandon. Renowned for its strict grape selection process, which means that only roughly half of the past 100 or so vintages have been declared. Dom Pérignon use Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in roughly equal parts.

Blessed with steady, moderate vintage conditions, leading to healthy, perfectly ripe grapes, 2006 produced a balanced, generous Champagne. Delicate marzipan and cocoa lead the way, giving way to powerful yet wonderfully finessed peach and white apricot and, finally, decadent, spicy notes that go on and on.
