The Oddbins Take

It’s spring. The sun is just warming up over the Spanish wild meadow you are walking though. To your delight, you hear the tinkling of a stream nearby, adding a serene musical background to the firm crunch of the soil under foot. Sweet fragrances of fennel, bay and cereal abound, combining with fresh quince and pear notes from the orchard just ahead. This isn’t a walk we’re describing, people; this is wine. This is El Quintanal Verdejo and it’s yours for £10. Not ‘alf bad.

Winemaker Oscar Aragón García studied oenology for five years in La Rioja, and stayed in the area for five more years to work with and enjoy the local wines, food and people. He then moved to Jerez, where he worked as a winemaker and learned more about the legendary wines of that area. Thereafter he travel through the wine regions of the world from South Africa to California, working and studying English.

The vineyards that produce this Verdejo are located in Rueda, between the confines of the Duero River, and are aged between 18 and 30 years old. The soil is a mixture of sandy and clay. The average yield is 4,000kg/ha and the grapes are harvested manually. In the winery, the grapes underwent alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks.

The wine is straw yellow, with greenish reflections. It has intense aromas of white orchard and some tropical fruits, with a background of flowers, light herbal notes typical of the variety such as fennel, bay leaf and feelings of cereal. With good acidity, body and volume, it is a fantastic wine with long finish.
