The Oddbins Take

This wine is a runaway Aussie juggernaut. The trailer was fully loaded in McLaren Vale with heady perfume, juicy blackberries, chocolate, black pepper, sweet spice, plums, raspberries and a few sticks of rhubarb for good measure. The brakes don't work and it's on a collision course with your taste buds. We recommend bracing for the impact but letting the crash happen. Fans of Peter Lehmann and Grant Burge, meet their protégé Simon Hackett…

McLaren Vale has a Mediterranean climate with long warm days and short cool nights, perfect for the ripening of grapes, especially red varietals. Rainfall is low, with the dry period stretching from December to March/ April, with 580-780mm rain per annum concentrated in the winter. Soil types vary across the region, including terra rossa, soft sand and dark clay, they are all commonly free-draining, so hold little water. The region is famous for Shiraz production, which accounts for about 50% of the total crush per year.
