The Oddbins Take

Looks can be deceiving. Have you ever witnessed a body builder weep? Or watched a manicured beauty queen don a pair of boxing gloves? Well that's what springs to mind when we think of this wine from Piedmont.

This Barbaresco is light in appearance but it doesn't half pack a punch. This is 100% Nebbiolo, like its big brother Barolo, but it is decidedly more delicate and feminine.

It has an explosion of flavours on the palate, with tart red cherry flavours and sweet spices, underpinned by light but grippy tannins. A testament to nurture over nature if ever there was one.

Cantine Gemma was established in 1978 by Silvano Piacentini. The estate consists of 16 hectares between the two communes of Seralunga and Monforte d'Alba. The winery, which used to belong to Marchesi Falletti's Opera Pia Barolo, has now been renovated with modern, up-to-date equipment.

65% of the Nebbiolo grapes harvested in the Cantine Gemma estate are used to produce Barolo and the rest is used to create Barbaresco, a lighter, elegant red. Giorgio Barbero has been the wine maker at Cantine Gemma since 1990 and he also supervises the development of the viticultural techniques in the vineyards.

This Barbaresco is lighter in appearance than Barolo. On the nose it offers tart red fruit and hints of sweet spices like cardamom. It has grippy tannins and high acidity, with lots of floral and herbal flavours. Its light appearance is deceiving as it is full of rich cherry flavours and earthy, herbaceous notes. This wine is a great accompaniment with umami-rich, earthy dishes like mushroom stroganoff.
