The Oddbins Take

You may have heard of tea picked by monkeys and coffee defecated by civets. Those are nothing, this is an exotically spiced Gewurztraminer with big fat Turkish Delight and lychee flavours, that’s made by Alsatians. It’s very rare because when it comes to winemaking, Alsatians are easily distracted by other things like licking their fur, catching their tails, chasing postmen and watching The Littlest Hobo. So grab it quick, it can’t stay for long, just turn around and it’s gone again.

This small co-operative, founded in 1954, has 110 members and 200 hectares of vineyard in the Haut-Rhin, 9km from Colmar. It was rated the best co-operativsdf r re in Alsace, and third in the whole of France, by La Revue du Vin de France in 2005. Winemaker Nicolas Garde started at the winery in 2004, and his influence is now being seen in the way the wines are improving with each vintage. The vineyards are planted with 24% Riesling, 21% Pinot Blanc, 18% Gewurztraminer, 14% Pinot Gris and 14% Pinot Noir.
