The Oddbins Take

This is just what's needed from a South African red at the moment and marks a pleasant departure from the kind of red you may already know. This is a more balanced red and, as its back label rightly questions: "Is it New World or is it Old World?". This best-of-both -worlds balance is something SA is getting down to a tee, and at a respectable 13.5%, this is good enough to be both.

Grapes for this wine were sourced from a south-facing vineyard on decomposed granite soils in the Helderberg Mountain area of Stellenbosch. In the winery, following several days cold-soaking on the skins to promote fruitiness, colour and flavour, the grapes were fermented using wild yeasts over a twelve day period. Micro-oxygenation and malolactic fermentation continued in tank before the wine was rack off, half to stainless steel tanks, the other half to fourth-fill oak barrels.
