The Oddbins Take

Irrelevant as it may seem, this is this writer’s favourite little wine label insignia in the whole of Oddbins! It shows a gentleman in a bowler hat riding a penny-farthing bicycle, what better way to show the sheer class of this bargain of an Italian red.

This delightful tipple is medium-bodied well balanced and smooth; fruity with a cherry-spice note. If nothing else, it’s the perfect drop to drink whilst pondering how exactly one get’s on and off the bizarre bicycle in the first place!

David Williams in The Observer, 1/11/15: "Oddbins has a delicious candidate in Gufo Rosso from Abruzzo, which has the tartness of cherries and the juiciness of ripe plums"

Cantina Tollo was established in 1960 by a group of vignerons in the Abruzzo region. Its 1,200 current members offer the co-operative almost 3,500 hectares of vineyards to draw on, largely in southern Abruzzo around Chieti where the hills between the sea and the Apennines provide ideal vineyard conditions.

Fermentation and maceration of the grapes happened in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 28°C. Before bottling the wine rested in tank for a further four months. No egg or dairy products were used in production.
