The Oddbins Take

Irrelevant as it may seem, this is this writer's favourite little wine label insignia in the whole of Oddbins! It shows the face of an owl with flowing mane and doughnut eyes, cute yet cunning, the owl is a sacred thing! You'll be an equally wise owl to swoop down on this absolute bargain of an Italian red. This delightful tipple is medium-bodied well balanced and smooth; fruity with a cherry-spice note. So, Mr.Owl, forget field mice, this red's real nice!

David Williams in The Observer, 1/11/15: "Oddbins has a delicious candidate in Gufo Rosso from Abruzzo, which has the tartness of cherries and the juiciness of ripe plums"
Cantina Tollo was established in 1960 by a group of vignerons in the Abruzzo region. Its 1,200 current members offer the co-operative almost 3,500 hectares of vineyards to draw on, largely in southern Abruzzo around Chieti where the hills between the sea and the Apennines provide ideal vineyard conditions. Fermentation and maceration of the grapes happened in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 28°C. Before bottling the wine rested in tank for a further four months. No egg or dairy products were used in production.
