The Oddbins Take

You can do a lot with £7. You could buy some hair dye and go strawberry blonde. You could buy a decent quality ball point pen. Or! You could buy yourself a taste of the Argentine countryside, fresh blackberries and an oomph of hot spice from the gusty plains at the foot of the Andes. And, whilst you can’t beat a high quality biro, we’d take the wine any day. Obvz.

The San Juan de la Frontera winery was founded in 2002 and is located in the Tulum Valley, at the foot of the Andes – the main valley of the province of San Juan in the region of Cuyo, western central Argentina. The vineyards have a semi-desert climate and rainfall is about 130mm a year. The winery has a capacity of 5,000,000 litres and wines are aged in French and American oak barrels.

The winery produces a range of single varietal wines, made with grapes from their own vineyards and selected by the winemaker to express the best qualities of the land. Daniel Ekkert is one of the most renowned winemakers in Argentina and helped introduce Malbec to the global market. He has spent two years in France and worked for a number of bodegas in Argentina including Penaflor, Cruz de Piedra and Argento. He is a consultant for projects in both countries.

The winery employs minimum use of chemicals in the vineyards and uses no eggs or dairy in the winemaking process. Incienso is a soft, forward, easy-drinking Malbec that strikes a good balance between sweet fruit and dry tannins. An intense colour, with a very interesting bouquet of black fruits, spices and mocha. The initial impression on the palate is of sweet, fresh fruit that develops further with a delicate touch of vanilla from the wine’s time in oak.
