The Oddbins Take

We want to know what on earth James Bay was drinking when he started singing about holding rivers back. We mean, has he ever actually tried stopping a river? We imagine it’d be rather difficult.

Though, we’re sure he wouldn’t be so keen on such a thankless job if he’d been drinking this Chardonnay instead. A rich and approachable white wine with nectarine, pink grapefruit, guava and peach; nobody in their right mind would dream of holding Kumeu River back after tasting this wonder.

Hold your horses, James, put your feet up and crack open a bottle instead. Let Kumeu River run freely! And most importantly, keep the Chardonnay flowing…

Kumeu River is run by the Brajkovich family, who came from Croatia to New Zealand and quickly became one of the founding families of the New Zealand wine industry. Michael Brajkovich, winemaker at Kumeu River, graduated as top of the class from Roseworthy College in South Australia with a Bachelor's Degree in Oenology. He went on to become New Zealand's first Master of Wine and as well as making wines he is also a well respected wine judge in both New Zealand and Australia.

Producing wines using grapes from 30 hectares of their own vineyards, and from 10 hectares other local vineyards, Kumeu River have gained global recognition for setting a benchmark for non-Burgundy produced Chardonnay. They employ old world, French winemaking styles to create their chardonnay's which allows them to create light and refined white wines.

Their 2015 Estate Chardonnay offers aromas of nectarines, pink grapefruit and guava fruits. This fragrant, medium-bodied wine is slightly peachy with a richness that leads into a bracing acidity on its long finish.

Due to spring frosts and a resulting poor flowering of the vines, there was a lower yield of the 2015 vintage than expected. Nevertheless, it expresses a remarkable depth and intensity in spite of the smaller quantities of available grapes.
