The Oddbins Take

Bolt the doors and check under the stairs, for we have a spine-chilling tale to tell about the Devil’s Elbow. Naaaat. This wine is only named after a hairy bit of road near the Longview Estate, not after the Dark Lord himself!

But dark and powerful this wine certainly is… aged for 20 months in French oak and made from grapes solely grown on the estate, which has a slightly warmer microclimate that suits Cabernet Sauvignon, this has beautiful blackcurrant, clove, mint and toast characters. You might want to bolt the door just to keep it to yourself, TBH.

Longview is a stunning family owned Australian vineyard located just outside the historic township of Macclesfield in the Adelaide Hills. Set on undulating slopes reminiscent of classic old world estates, it has quickly established itself as one the most awarded vineyards in the region since its first vintage in 2001. Longview Vineyard is a little warmer than other Adelaide Hills' sites but its wines are still decidedly cool climate in style, showing restraint and finesse without sacrificing depth.

All wines (besides some vintages of their Red Bucket wines) are strictly estate Grown. They are passionate about their vineyard and the site it belongs to and believe each of their wines expresses the vineyard and the vintage. They are proud to be a family owned and operated estate. Contract winemaking is undertaken by Barossa Vintners, headed up by Ben Glaetzer. All wines are selected as single parcels in the vineyard and blended together with the Longview team.

Longview's Devil's Elbow Cabernet Sauvignon is a very unique Australian wine. For many years, the Adelaide Hills has been too cold to ripen the sometimes difficult Cabernet grape. But Longview's unique estate in Macclesfield is a touch warmer (around 1 degree on average) than other Adelaide Hills sites. This means they can ripen Cabernet Sauvignon perfectly.

Longview Vineyard is minimal in everything it does. It does not allow broad spectrum insecticides and believes in minimal sulphur use in both the vineyard and winery. No dairy and/or egg is used in any of the production methods. The Cabernet Sauvignon (100%) is sourced entirely from the Longview Estate. The fruit was harvested in cool conditions, crushed in small open top fermenters and aged in French oak barriques for 20 months.

Devil's Elbow takes its name from a notorious hairpin bend that you can see when you travel on the old freeway to the hills. The locals nicknamed it the Devil's Elbow. Rich purple and violet in colour, with aromas of black current, clove, mint and spiced dark cherry, it has toasty oak characters, perfectly balanced tannin and a long clean finish.
