The Oddbins Take

***Silver at the International Wine Challenge 2015*

Founded by brothers Peter and Mark Saturno, after they tired of city life in The Big Apple and decided to return home to their homeland of Macclesfield in the Adelaide Hills, Australia. Whilst we are happy that they were able to retreat from the frenetic pace of New York, we’re also very pleased that they started making wine in this idyllic spot. Macclesfield is a tad warmer than the rest of the cool climate region of Adelaide, and this means that the Saturno brothers are able to produce wines with great depth and intensity, as well as the finesse and poise, like this rich, raspberry and game-flavoured belter. A rather nice homecoming, we say.

Longview is a family-owned vineyard located just outside the township of Macclesfield in the Adelaide Hills. Set on undulating slopes reminiscent of classic old world estates, the vineyard is a little warmer than other Adelaide Hills sites, but its wines are still decidedly cool climate in style, showing restraint and finesse without sacrificing depth. The estate is family owned and operated and contract winemaking is undertaken by Barossa Vintners, headed up by Ben Glaetzer. All wines are selected as single parcels in the vineyard and blended together with the Longview team.

The winery employs minimalist techniques across the board. It does not allow broad spectrum insecticides and uses minimal sulphur in both the vineyard and winery. No dairy or egg is used in any its wines.

Contract winemaking is undertaken by Barossa Vintners, headed up by Ben Glaetzer. All wines are selected as single parcels in the vineyard and blended together with the Longview team.

The Shiraz component (52%) is sourced from the Longview Estate and the Cabernet Sauvignon component (48%) is entirely from the foothills of the McLaren Vale. The fruit was harvested in cool conditions and crushed into large open fermenters. Maturation took place in old and new French oak for 15 months, in a mixture of barriques and hogs heads.

The Red Bucket Shiraz Cabernet is a distinctive, cool climate, southern Australian style. The 2010 exudes raspberries, musk and ripe dark berry fruit characteristics, with some gamey stone fruit characters on the palate. It is flavoursome, rich and balanced, with integrated oak and a long, smooth finish.
