The Oddbins Take

***Silver at the International Wine Challenge 2015***

This wine takes its name not from the Aussie slang for hard work, although judging by its magnificently rich, sturdy and swarthy character, you’d wager they had put a lot of work into it. Nope, this wine takes its name from the striking Australian grass shrub, pictured on the label, which also reveals the producer’s love for their homeland and this, too, shines through in this terroir-driven wine, whose dense, ripe black cherry and white pepper flavours show off the warmth of the Macclesfield micro-climate.

Longview is a family-owned vineyard located just outside the township of Macclesfield in the Adelaide Hills. Set on undulating slopes reminiscent of classic old world estates, the vineyard is a little warmer than other Adelaide Hills sites, but its wines are still decidedly cool climate in style, showing restraint and finesse without sacrificing depth.

They estate is family owned and operated and contract winemaking is undertaken by Barossa Vintners, headed up by Ben Glaetzer. All wines are selected as single parcels in the vineyard and blended together with the Longview team.

The winery employs minimalist techniques across the board. It does not allow broad spectrum insecticides and uses minimal sulphur in both the vineyard and winery. No dairy or egg is used in any its wines.

The Adelaide Hills is gaining an amazing reputation for world class Shiraz. Longview's unique estate in Macclesfield is a touch warmer (around one degree on average) than other Adelaide Hills sites. This means they can ripen Shiraz perfectly. This Yakka Shiraz offers exceptional value for money and provides amazing quality. The fruit for this wine is sourced from Longview's family-owned estate. Yakka is a slang name for a striking Australian grass shrub.

The Shiraz fruit was harvested in cool conditions crushed in small open top fermenters and then aged in new and old French oak.

The 2009 Yakka Shiraz is dark purple in colour, with aromas of black cherries, white pepper and baking spices exhibiting flavours of dark chocolate and plums. It has toasty oak characters, perfectly balanced tannin and a long clean finish.
