The Oddbins Take

South African reds are all dark, meaty and chewy as biltong right? Well no, not all of them. As Bob Dylan famously sang “the wines they are a changin’.” Either way this is something new and very, very special. Produced by a Scottish family, this is cool-climate Burgundian elegance from the southern hemisphere. Dispel those dark thoughts and turn towards the light.

Lothian Vineyards, started in 2004, is a 10 hectare vineyard in the highlands of Elgin. Lothian specialises in the cold climate Burgundian wines - Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling but also has Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. Elgin is a traditional apple growing area that is becoming well known for its wines. It enjoys the famous Cape sunshine but has the added benefit of higher altitude and proximity to the ocean. The vineyard is owned by the Wilson family, originally from Scotland, who are now in their third generation of grape growing and winemaking in the Cape.
