The Oddbins Take

Everybody loves the sun, but if we were powdery mildew or phylloxera we'd probably want to go somewhere a little cooler than Jumilla for our holidays. There's little rain and endless hot sunshine, so if you prune and train your vines the right way, the sun can help you deal with vineyard pests and organic viticulture becomes quite a bit easier. Which is great news for Bodegas Luzon, who can make this lively, friendly, fruit-filled and sweetly balanced humdinger without recourse to all manner of chemical nasties. See you in the Loire Valley this summer then, mealy bugs and thrips!

Brian Elliot in The Scotsman, 5/7/15: "This is one of several – pretty good – new Spanish reds under £10 in Oddbins and has the classic organic wine combination of bright, pure fruit yet vaguely earthy, but attractive, savoury undertones. Here, it also brings together firm acidity, cherry menthol and clove flavours along with that typical monastrell (mourvèdre) tannic twist."

Bodegas Luzon is a leader in the making and export of quality wines from the DO Jumilla in Murcia, Spain. It was established in 1916 and has more than 500 hectares of its own vineyards. The Fuertes Group acquired ownership of the majority of the winery in 2005, undertaking major investments to refurbish and completely modernise Bodegas Luzón to the highest standards possible. Today, they are a modern and innovative winery, preserving the best of their past to produce wines of great personality and character.

The technical department is led by Luis Sánchez Sánchez who has plentiful experience of winemaking. He has a Masters degree in Viticulture, Oenology and Wine Marketing and is an accredited Member of the Spanish Tasters Union. He started his career in Omblancas Wineries in 1978 and, after various winemaking positions around Spain, he returned to Jumilla in 2000 to help build the Bodegas Luzon project.

Luzon Verde Organic is certified by CAERM, the wine being produced according to EU regulations with organically grown grapes. Organic and non-organic grapes are treated completely separately in the winery. The wine retains contact with the skins for 10-15 days, at temperatures not in excess of 24C.

The wine has vibrant red fruit aromas, underpinned with black forest berries, and an approachable, fruit-forward palate built on sweet tannins and wonderfully proportioned acidity.
