Madeira Barbeito Malvasia Reserva

The Oddbins Take

The ethos of Ricardo Diogo, the winemaker at Vinhos Barbeito, is that ‘small is beautiful’. We think he is absolutely right. Take Ronnie Corbett. OK maybe ‘beautiful’ isn’t quite the word, but he certainly knows how to make the most of what he has: Ronnie Barker’s line "I look up to him [John Cleese] because he is upper class, but I look down on him [Corbett] because he is lower class", followed with Corbett saying: "I know my place”, wouldn’t really be the same if Corbett was of an average height. So ‘be small and proud’, we cry!

Vinhos Barbeito was founded in 1946 by Mario Barbeito. His grandson, Ricardo Diogo took over in 1993, and has worked hard to achieve the respect of his peers. He was recently referred to on Robert Parker's website as the "game-changer of Madeira". His ethos is ‘small is beautiful’ and he places a firm emphasis on the traditional cask ageing (‘canteiro’) process for Madeira, avoiding the use of caramel for colour adjustment.

Having read history at university, Diogo returned to the family company, where he ‘found his calling’. He took over from his mother in 1993, having previously worked in the lodge alongside his grandfather.

For the Barbeito Malvasia Reserva, the grapes underwent classic fermentation and was aged entirely in wood casks, before being bottled for between five and seven years.

It is a young, but classically made Madeira, with notes of toffee, caramel and a touch of tangy marmalade. Although it is the sweeter style of Madeira, it is balanced by a wonderful freshness.
