Naoussa. NAH’OWSA. Sounds like ‘house-the’. Got it? Good, because this is one of the most important names in Greek wine. Why? Because it is located on the south eastern slopes of Mount Vermio, with cool microclimate that exactly suits its native Xynomavro (ksee-NOH-mavro) grapes. Lesson over (and apologies to any Greek aficionados out there). As for the wine? It has amazing, red berry, raspberry and forest fruit on the nose with a dry, fruity and elegant palate.

Tim Atkin in Woman & Home, June 2015: "Don’t worry if you haven’t heard of Xynomavro, the grape from which this delicious Greek wine is made. Deceptively pale in colour, it has sweet red cherry and strawberry flavours and plenty of backbone. Perfect with this month’s spicy lamb cutlets."

Although Apostolos Thymiopoulos’ family has been growing the Xinomavro grape on their land in the village of Trilofos, near Thessaloniki, northern Greece, for generations, he is the first member to make wine from it. After studying winemaking in Athens, he set up Thymiopoulos Vineyards and started making Xinomavro, for which he has attracted much praise. Named in The Wine Opus (a reference tome, listing up-and-coming producers) as one of Greece’s winemaking ‘rising stars’, Apostolos’ goal is “to make wines only from Greek grape varieties, to follow bio-dynamic principles where possible and to make wines of integrity and a sense of place”.
