The Oddbins Take

This Port, unlike yours truly, was charming in its youth. Full of swaggering, fresh young fruit, it was a joy to drink, which isn’t always the case for Vintage Ports. However, the passage of time has mellowed it out (something we can relate to) even more and now it is a Port of complexity and, dare we say, majesty. With flavours of spiced, raisiny fruit, damson and black treacle, it’s fair to say it has aged well and has picked up a few tricks over the years. Noval Silval 1998 has never been more ready.

Noval Silval is an earlier drinking-style of vintage port, 50% made with grapes from the quinta and 50% from local A-rated vineyards. This is a vintage port of exceptional quality that can be enjoyed from the moment of purchase and can be aged for 15-20 years from the vintage date.

Quinta do Noval lies in the Douro valley in Northern Portugal where great Port has been produced since 1715. Noval is unique among the great traditional Port houses in its emphasis on the importance of the vineyard. It is significant that the company is named after its vineyard, that it is entirely based in the Douro valley, that its principal Vintage Ports, Quinta do Noval Nacional and Quinta do Noval are both single vineyards wines.

António Manuel de Sousa Pinto Agrellos, 63, hails from a family that has been producing and trading in Port wine from the Douro Valley for four generations. He was schooled at the 'Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto', and also, in 1976/77, in the areas of tasting, knowledge and chemistry of wine at the Institut d'Oenologie with the University of Bordeaux. He has been the Technical Director of Quinta do Noval since 1993. Since 1994, he has been recognised in the world of wine for the excellence of his production at Quinta do Noval. He has twice won recognition from the Portuguese press as Oenologist of the year for fortified wines. Over the past 15 years, the Port and wines from Douro de Quinta do Noval have regularly been listed amongst the best in their category. Three Quinta do Noval Vintage Ports have achieved a maximum 100 point rating.

The grapes were trodden by foot and fermented in the traditional ‘lagares’ of the Quinta, where a disciplined and intense treading is fundamental for a good final result. This is a very rare practice nowadays.

Deep, dark fruit, developed aromas of blackberry and spice lead the way in this complex, characterful wine.
