The Oddbins Take

Nuit-Saint-Georges is a place in France where they make really extraordinary wine. It is not a reference to the 'Night of Saint George', which took place in AD 300 somewhere in Oxfordshire, when England’s revered patron saint went completely bonkers, stole a dog, climbed an oak tree and wouldn’t come down until the morning. No: Domaine d’Ardhuy’s Nuit-Saint-Georges, like all their outstanding expressions of Pinot Noir, is complex, nuanced and sings with bright fruit. A sumptuous, robust style of Burgundy that goes really rather nicely with roast duck.

The vineyard is an old massal selection (where cuttings from only the best vines are propagated), planted in 1976. The strains of Pinot Noir used are fertile and tend to be over-productive, therefore unilateral cordon pruning, or Cordon de Royat, is done, resulting in smaller clusters that ripen better.
