Can we stereotype slightly? Please? Because this wine, and this winery, really sum up the countries that they come from. The De Bortoli family emigrated to Australia from northern Italy in 1928 and their wines sing with the warmth, humour and joie de vivre that both countries seem to have in bucket loads.

Their Old Boys 21 Year Old Tawny Port has oodles of vanilla bean, toasted hazelnut, dried fruit and mocha goodness. We reckon it could be something of a mascot for Italian-Australians.

De Bortoli Wines is a third generation family wine company established by Vittorio and Guiseppina De Bortoli in 1928, who emigrated to Australia from Northern Italy. Their son, the energetic and dynamic Deen De Bortoli, expanded and consolidated the business and Deen’s children have established De Bortoli’s reputation for premium wine. Italian family values passed down from Vittorio remain core values of the wine production. There is a culture of hard work and generosity – with plenty of sharing of good food and good wine.

Fruit is allowed to stay on the vine until it is very sweet and there an intense concentration of flavours has developed. After crushing and partial fermentation to retain some sweetness, the wine is pressed and then fortified with a neutral spirit prior to maturation in small and large format oak casks.

Classic tawny colour with streaks of amber, it has an array of aromas, from raisins to mocha, from vanilla pods to almonds and hazelnuts. The palate is initially luscious, with richly concentrated fruit and nut flavours, nuances of mocha and coffee and complex, barrel-aged flavours in harmony resulting in a smooth, lingering drying finish.
