The Oddbins Take

Like the bit in Beetlejuice when the eponymous, messed-up protagonist puts a spell on his visitors, making them sing Day O (The Banana Boat Song) against their will, whatever you’re doing, Paseo Red Wine is sure to fill you with Harry Belafonte-esque feelings of elation. Partly because of the marvellous price, but mostly because of the vibrant, sweet cherry and cedar wood-flavoured, critically acclaimed wine itself. Altogether now, “Day O! Me say day, me say day, me say day.”

"Super-summery, with lifted red berries and a balanced, gently tannic mouthfeel. It’s so refreshing, it tastes like your first drink after a long cycle in the Algarve, which is ironic, as it’s a Portuguese wine! Easily recognisable, as it has a silver bicycle on the black label!" - Anthony Reynolds, The Herald (May 2013)

"This juicy berry-scented red and its racy, floral white partner, are rare examples of wines at this pricepoint that actually taste like wine as opposed to chemicals or alcoholic jam." - David Williams, The Observer (January 2014)

Paseo red is produced from carefully selected Castelão, Alicante Bouschet and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, grown in vineyards near Lisbon. The vineyards are planted at a density of Density of 3.500-4.000 plants/ha, on clay and limestone soils.

Half of the grapes are harvested by hand and half by machine. They are pressing after being totally de-stemmed. Traditional fermentation takes place in epoxy-lined cement and stainless steel vats of 26.500 litres, with a programmable pumping over system and temperature set at between 28º C and 30º C. it undergoes a long period of maceration, with a submerged cap, for 28 days. It is then partially aged in 250 litres barrels of Portuguese and French oak for four months.

With a dark and attractive bright ruby colour, it has aromas of sweet cherry, dried wood and vanilla. On the palate it has concentrated blackcurrant and berry fruit flavours with oak notes and agreeably pronounced but balanced acidity, soft tannins and a persistent finish.
