The Oddbins Take

The Pearlstone Pinotage was named after the enormous granite Paarl Rock, which apparently looks like a pearl. Although we think the rock looks more like a sleeping elephant, we agree that this wine from the Rhebokskloof Estate shines like a pearl. Chunky but smooth, the palate brings soft red fruits and notes of chocolate covered coffee beans. Give this wine a lovely rich accompaniment like chargrilled meat, pasta with slow cooked tomato sauce, stews and anything spiced with harissa.

Paarl in the Western Cape of South Africa has fertile soils and a warm climate cooled by Atlantic breezes. The Rhebokskloof Estate is situated in a basin nestled between two valleys that tends to be slightly cooler than most of Paarl. The soil is formed mainly from decomposed granite. The estate has changed hand many times, but is now under the ownership of a dynamic team of South African business people intent on restoring the farm to its former beauty.
