The Oddbins Take

Marsala is really a wonderful thing. Made in the area around the ancient coastal town of the same name on the far west coast of Sicily, it smacks of Italian sunshine. Indeed, if you’ve used up all your leave this year, this could make a fine replacement for a vacanza Italiana. With figs, prunes and mesmeric caramel depths from its two years in oak barrels, this is a real delight and, at a bargainous £6.50, it is so much cheaper than a holiday.

In 1880, vineyard-owner Paolo Pellegrino founded Cantine Pellegrino and, in few years, succeeded in grew this family company into one of the most important wineries in Marsala; a position it has kept until today.

Grown in the Trapani area of Marsala and Mazara del Vallo, the grapes are vinified in the traditional method and aged for at least two years in oak casks.

An intense amber colour, this Marsala has intense, persistent, pleasant oak scents and on the palate it is rounded, soft and richly sweet.
