The Oddbins Take

Carmenere is the forgotten one of the six Bordeaux grape varieties. But like an incredibly athletic and intrepid mole it has popped its head up in Chile. Here it produces some incredibly potent and complex reds like this one. Perez Cruz's Carménère is a riotous carnival of a wine, ripe black berry fruits mingle with more dried and baked fruit flavours and some lovely green herby notes. There's so much going on here it's impossible not to just get swept along with the party.

Low yields of grapes were handpicked in the last week of April, carefully cleaned, crushed and cold soak macerated for four days. This wine is completely estate bottled and the winery focuses on red wines only. Winemaker German Lyon learnt his trade in Languedoc in France and does not like to play around with his wine too much (in jargon “minimal intervention”), to allow the grapes to sing and the wines to reflect the terroir of the Maipo Alto. This Carménère was aged in French oak, imparting spices, structure and tannin, for 14 months.
