Aglianico Terredora

From a great Campanian producer with a proven track record for Taurasi, this is an unoaked, younger and earlier drinking form of Aglianico. It shows plenty of primary fruit depth that is typical of this local variety, yet with a nicely balanced tannic grip that makes it a far more seriously satisfying wine than many other young, southern Italian reds.

Tasting Notes : The powerful nose displays aromas of dark cherry, ripe red berries and spicy pepper. The palate has more cherry flavours with hints of violets and dried prunes plus cacao and toasted notes. Full and round it has lovely fine mouth coating tannins.

Method of Production : The handpicked grapes (half estate grown, half bought) were destemmed, crushed and cold soaked prior to being fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. Total skin contact time was one week. The wine was kept in tank, on its lees, where it underwent malolactic conversion and six months' maturation, before being fined and bottled.

Well...

...slap my side and call me Betsey, this is a real surprise. Lovely toasty, smokey cherry fruit, with a jammy (though not over-extracted) edge. The vineyard itself predates Jesus' supposed birth, and it's a form of wine descended from the now extinct red Falernian that the Romans prized as the Rothschild of its day. It's easy to taste that heritage here. And just think, all of this for a tenner.
