This is majestic and powerful, an archetypal Speyside. Great as a gift if you're not certain of someone's tastes, full and smooth without the distinct iodene/peatiness of an Islay malt.

Tasting Notes : Orange rind, sweet dumpling and Christmas cake all combine on the nose and palate and are followed by butterscotch notes.

Producer : The Macallan

Method of Production : Pure borehole water is mixed with lightly peated, ground malt. Macallan only use superior 'Golden Promise' barley malt, using 90% of Scotland's annual crop. Fermentation in stainless steel washbacks precedes distillation in pot stills. 1 wash still feeds 2 spirit stills, the small spirit stills giving rich spirit. Macallan only take the best 17% of each distillation (less than other distillers). 10 years ageing in Sherry casks gives richness.

Currently reading Iain Banks "Pure Spirit - The Search for the perfect Dram" and this was mentioned as an exceptional whisky. Saw it behind the bar at the hotel I was in at the weekend, was a lovely introduction to "proper' whisky.

Good as Speysides go, but not a patch on a peaty Islay Malt!

A very smooth dram with a pronounced sherry nose, buttery texture, slightly sweet and rich. Very easy drinking and always a pleasure.

Technically an excellent whisky, but personally a bit much sherry for me. Very nutty and almost sweet. Interesting though
