Anakena Ona Syrah

Syrah is seriously being taken to the bossom of Chilean wine makers. Could it be the influence of Northern Rhône Rangers? I doubt it; it is more likely owing to the fact that there are an abundance of terroirs in Chile just perfect for this variety. This choice drop from Anakena just goes to show that they are not simply chasing the Aussie Shiraz model either - dark, rich and above all, layers upon layers of crunchy spice make this just the sort of wine to make a Languedoc lover smile.

Tasting Notes : Deep red in colour. Rich raspberry and blueberry aromas blend with hints of clove and spices. On the palate it is rich and smooth with rounded tannins and a long finish.

Method of Production : Handpicked grapes were destemmed, crushed and cold macerated for a week. The must and the skins were transferred to stainless steel tanks for fermentation at 26 to 28°C for a week, with regular pumping over. There was then a period of five days post-fermentation maceration before the wine was pressed from its skins and transferred to a combination of French and American oak barrels where malolactic conversion occurred. Maturation lasted for ten months with the lees stirred twice a week the wine was gently filtered before bottling.

Absolutely delicious. Makes a very interesting comparison with Stonecroft Syrah from NZ. Was given a bottle - hotfoot to Oddbins next morning for more!(ps - no association with a/m save as happy/smug customer!)
