Only a fifth of the wineries in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2012 were awarded five stars. Last year, James employed a novel judging criteria, in which he made producers perform “I’m a little tea pot”, deducting points and taking pot shots at them with a Black Widow slingshot if the performance displeased him. Robert Oatley is said to have given an Oscar-worthy rendition. We think his winery deserved its five stars even without the singing and dancing. This Shiraz is proof.

The Robert Oatley Signature Series draws on a remarkable portfolio of vineyards nurtured by the winemaking talent of Larry Cherubino showcasing Australia's most successful styles and regions.

In the 1970's Robert Oatley founded Rosemount Estate, creating accessible, easy-to-drink wines that weren't afraid to show their varietal colours with assertive flavours. Almost overnight, they became "The Taste of Australia" and the style that defined a continent. Four decades later, Bob Oatley and his family are again playing a key role in setting a new direction. Never one to rest on his laurels, in 2006 and at the age of nearly 80, Bob decided it was time to redefine perceptions about the essence of Australian wine. From Robert Oatley Vineyards comes a style reflecting old world influences as well as contemporary international tastes. It's the beginning of a second Australian wine renaissance grounded in a sense of place and tradition, led by the vision of one of Australia's first wine statesman.

"With over forty years of winemaking experience I've learnt there are two important elements when it comes to creating great wine.  Firstly, the best wines show a true sense of the land - that ideal combination of grape variety and region.  Secondly, they taste even better when shared with friends.  I hope you enjoy drinking these wines as much as we enjoyed making them," he says.

Larry Cherubino is one of Australia's most acclaimed winemakers, with extensive experience in large and small estates in Australia and major overseas regions. A graduate of Roseworthy College, Larry had a distinguished career with BRL Hardy at Tintara in South Australia and then at Houghton in Western Australia, where he has won hundreds of awards in the highly competitive Australian and International wine show system.  Larry is Director of Winemaking for Robert Oatley Vineyards.

They selected premium parcels of Shiraz from around the Blewitt Springs - Willunga area of southern McLaren Vale, where the hills run down to the ocean. The juice was fermented on the skins and matured in French oak for ten months.

This is a soft, fleshy textured Shiraz displaying blueberries and spice, supple tannins and stylish French oak influence.
