The Oddbins Take

Although apparently back into vogue, white stilettos still have a dodgy reputation. Police cars are turning silver because the white ones have a lower resale value. White tuxedos smack of trying too hard and can transform red wine into a perilous danger. And in the Bavarian fairy tale, Snow White messes around seven unwitting short fellows before running off with the tall guy. White, just isn't that classy is it? Unless of course it's the Ruinart Blanc de Blancs: an illustrious Champagne made from only the finest white grapes, that spills over with citrus, honeysuckle, apricot and almond notes.

Ruinart is the oldest established Champagne house, exclusively producing Champagne since 1729. Founded by Nicolas Ruinart in the city of Reims. An entrepreneur, Nicolas realised the ambitions of his Uncle, Dom Thierry Ruinart: to make Ruinart an authentic Champagne House. In the period immediately following the 1728 edict of Louis XV, which authorized the transport of wine in bottles, the house was established. Prior to this edict, wine could only be transported in barrels, which made it impossible to send Champagne to distant markets, and confined consumption primarily to its area of production. So Nicolas founded the House of Ruinart in 1729 and the first delivery of ‘wine with bubbles’ went out in January, 1730. At first the sparkling wine was a business gift for cloth purchasers, as Dom Ruinart’s brother was a cloth merchant, but six years later Maison Ruinart terminated its cloth selling activities due to success in the Champagne business. Since then, the Maison has kept the standards of excellence of its founders. The house is today owned by the parent company LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton.

Ruinart Blanc de Blancs is the Emblem of the Ruinart House style, as they consider Chardonnay to be the very soul of Ruinart. The grape, mainly harvested from the Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims terroirs, is at the heart of all their cuvées and they prize its vivacity, purity and luminosity.

The delicate, fragile Chardonnay reaches the full breadth of its aromatic richness after a slow maturation in the coolness of the Crayères chalk cellars. This maturation ‘is a test of our Cellar Master's skill, which required to tame the capriciousness of this grape’.

The grapes are all handpicked and fermentation takes place in temperature-regulated stainless steel fermenters. The wine undergoes full malolactic fermentation and receives a dosage of 9g/l.

Ruinart Blanc de Blancs embodies the purity of the Chardonnay grape. Made primarily with Premier Crus from the Montagne de Reims and the Cote des Blancs, it is intensely aromatic. The nose is powerfully reminiscent of fresh fruits, with dominant notes of citrus and exotic fruits, followed by a touch of jasmine, white peaches and pink peppercorns. This palate is both precise and clean as the wine delivers a radiant balance between roundness and smoothness.
