The Oddbins Take

The ridonculously talented Matt Thompson, at Saint Clair, featured on one of our ‘Inspire-themed posters, saying ‘I became a winemaker because, as a wine drinker, I needed to find a way to make it tax-deductible’. We like his style. But, when he made this wine, he didn’t just get a tax break on Pinot Noir, he created something beautiful: a gentle giant, with mellow Morello cherry, pine needles and hints of smoke. Take that, taxman!

This is a great value Marlborough Pinot Noir, from one of New Zealand’s most highly-awarded wineries – the family run Saint Clair Estate.

Founded by Neil and Judy Ibbotson in 1978 as grape growers, the first vintage they produced was in 1994 and was made by the award-winning winemaker, Matt Thompson. The Saint Clair winery is still family owned and is now one of the most awarded New Zealand producers.

Matt Thompson studied winemaking in Otago and has worked for Saint Clair since 1994. He also works a vintage in Italy each year and won the prestigious International winemaker of the year IWC in 2008.

The fruit was sourced from several vineyards within different sub-regions throughout Marlborough. Each batch of grapes was held cold for five days prior to ferment and cultured yeasts were used for the primary alcoholic fermentation. The must was hand-plunged six to eight times daily. Each batch was pressed to tank, settled than racked off lees to stainless steel or a mixture of new and seasoned French oak. The wine went through 100% malolactic fermentation.

It has a rich garnet core, with a purple-tinted rim. Ripe dark fruits of black cherry and black currant are followed by bright lifted aromas of raspberry on the nose. It has a beautifully bright and lifted palate, with delicious ripe strawberry and raspberry and layers of darker fruits. The acidity is well balanced and leads to an inviting, structured mid-palate, that has an elegant, well-integrated finish and great length.
