The Oddbins Take

It’s hard to stand out against the crowd, especially when the crowd is over-crowded. Y’know? Kiwi Sauvignon is a wine type that faces this peril. However, like a bright colour in a sea of beige, Saint Clair Sauvignon Blanc shines through like a triumphant hero, waving its piercing flavours of vibrant passion fruit, zippy grapefruit and herbaceous blackcurrant leaf boldly aloft, saying ‘I have a voice!’ Well, luckily our Buyer Ana heard Saint Clair’s cry and picked it up, giving it its rightful place on Oddbins shelves. A little character goes a long way…

Saint Clair Family Estate is owned by Neal and Judy Ibbotson, viticulture pioneers in Marlborough since 1978. Orinally suppliers of grapes to local vineyards the estate produced their first wine in 1994 and won all medals that year including gold, since they have continued to be recognized for superb quality winning with an impressive list of international accolades including, White Winemaker of the Year at the London International Wine Challenge in 2008 and Best New Zealand Wine Producer of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition 2005.

Saint Clair has developed six different vineyard sites in the region with terroirs suited to different varietals, only the very best fruit it picked for the Saint Clair label. A grading system was adopted in the 2001 to facilitate in monitoring quality levels in each vineyards, a tactic used to ensure varietals are planted where they are best suited to the terroir as well aiding in constant innovation of vineyard practices to ensure only the best quality grapes.

Saint Clair's Chief Wine Maker, Matt Thompson has collaborated with architect Neal Jones to create a state of the art winery, located in equal distance to the various vineyards sites. The site boasts modern equipment, adjoining facilities for bottling, storage and dispatching as well as a temperature controlled storage facility for up to 850 oak barriques on site.

This wine is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc sourced from three vineyards sites. Juice was pressed off with minimal skin contact, then fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel to retain freshness and zing. The wine is fresh with a palate of passionfruit, black currant leaf and grapefruit giving way to a pleasing herbaceous flair and lingering finish.
