The Oddbins Take

Thank heavens! A red Rhône that hasn't lost its head to alcohol or lost its mind to modernity. This is the way it should be and it's the way it used to be: Rhône with elegance, balance and charm. The predominant Syrah component in this Northern Rhône style lends a smooth, mellow, dark-fruited style that has just the right crisp bite to hold down the best of red meat dishes. Thank heavens - and thanks Saint Joseph while we're at it!

Winemaker Stéphane Vedeau owns small parcels of vines across northern and southern Rhône. The Boutin wines from the north are named after his mother, Jeannine Boutin. For his St Joseph, the Syrah and Roussanne grapes are harvested by hand, de-stemmed and then allowed to ferment together slowly on the skins for three to five weeks. After gentle pressing, the free-run and press wines are combined, then matured for fourteen months in a combination of 500 litre oak barrels and large vats.
