The Oddbins Take

You have to be careful when gushing about wine that you really, really like. Because it's tempting to say that you can actually taste the soil the vines were grown on, that you can taste that nearby pine tree, that you can taste the blood, sweat and….er, maybe we'll stop there. But it's true to say that the volcanic minerals of Santorini really shine through in this delightful, zippy, complex wine. You won't find a better sense of place in a white wine. It's a sheer joy.

Jane MacQuitty in The Times 16/11/13: “…Or splash out on my favourite Greek white of all, the starry white Hazidakis 2012 Assrytiko from volcanic Santorini with smouldering, steely, floral finesse.”

The Wine Gang, Report February 2014: "Typically smoky and mineral with rich lemony fruity and firm, invigorating, zesty acidity. Typical of what? We hoped you'd ask. Typical of the Assyrtiko grape (this wine is 100%) and typical of the wines of the volcanic island of Santorini."

The Hatzidakis winery is situated on the volcanic Greek island of Santorini. The ancient vines (some as old as 500 years) grow on soil that is a mixture of pumice and igneous lava. The vines are not irrigated and survive only on the moisture of the night air and the (rare) rain.
