Its creator, Mario Incisa Della Rochetta, first made the pioneering decision to plant cabernet sauvignon here in the 1940s. Although cultivating cabernet in Italy was almost unheard of, Mario was a great claret fan, and he realised that the climate and soils of Bordeaux were similar to those of part of his estate. Produced from a winery based in the Bolgheri region, Tuscany, the Tenuta San Guido winery gained its name as a result of the Sassicaia, one of Italys most famous wines. The winery was created by Mario Incisa Della Rochetta, who started by planting Cabernet sauvignon at the winery in 1948, an idea relatively unheard of in Italy. He spotted the climates at his winery were similar to more prominent locations for Cabernet sauvignon and this masterful idea resulted in great success.
