The Oddbins Take

Hey, where d'you think you're going? Why not stick around a while? Yeah, I know, there are only two of us here, just me and my right hand man and some pumps and fermenters and whatever, and OK, the place is kinda small, but hey, just have a glass of this wine. Yeah, that's right, it's nice.

In fact I'd say it was kinda velvety, ripe red fruit, a lot goin' on, mmm...y'know why? It's because those old vines out there have stuck around as well, and the older the vine, the more complex the wine. Usually. Those vines were pretty old when I pitched up here in 1984. What's that? Another glass? Now you're seein' sense...

Simon Hackett Wines is a boutique winery established in McLaren Vale, Southern Australia, in 1984. Simon himself was born in the Barossa Valley in a family home situated next to the Saltram Winery in Angaston. Aged 18, he began an apprenticeship at Saltram under the benign auspices of Peter Lehmann, and in 1973 he joined the winemaking team at Southern Vales Co-operative in McLaren Vale.

Having lived and worked in McLaren Vale all of his life, Simon understands the importance of maintaining old vineyards to harness the quality and intensity of fruit that they can offer. He hand crafts all of his wines in his small cellar, assisted only by a cellar hand and a few pumps. Little has changed in thirty-odd years, and winery life is unhurried, unfussy, friendly and attuned to the vineyards themselves.

All of Simon's reds are hand-crafted in small, open-topped fermenters and nurtured in French and American oak hogsheads. His whites are fermented in stainless steel and bottled early to retain their freshness and exuberant fruit characteristics.

The Grenache is medium-bodied and velvety, with a complexity coming through from the old vines that produced the fruit. Red fruits and ripe plum aromas lead to a juicy palate with a spiciness from the French oak and a smooth vanilla sensation from the American.
