The Oddbins Take

This wine has a very strong sense of place, which shines through when you drink it. Firstly, Pinotage is a classic flag-bearing wine for South Africa and, secondly, it is named after the majestic Southern Right Whale, that lives exclusively in the southern oceans. Basically if this was a game of Guess Who, this would be a pretty easy guess. And, with such a strong identity, what does it taste like? Soft, supple, gamey, with a firm, balanced structure and drenched in ripe berry flavours: the perfect Pinotage.

Southern Right’s aim is to produce serious, age worthy Pinotage combining a distinct South African fruit and flavour with classic styling and refinement.

The grapes were grown on stony, clay-rich soil and the wine was 100% barrel-aged in French oak for 10 and a half months. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation and was rough-filtered only.

This is an excellent example of Pinotage, with a balanced, firm structure and developed tannins. The soft wood flavours are complimented by berry fruits on the palate.
