The Oddbins Take

You are what you eat, so the saying goes. And this is manifestly true in Stanton and Killeen’s achingly delicious Rutherglen Muscat. What does the wine ‘eat’? It eats up the hot Australian sun, the time-honoured techniques maintained by this family-run winery and it gobbles up the love they put into it. The result? A raisin-rich, nutty, orange blossom and lavender-flavoured amber nectar.

Stanton and Killeen Wines is a family owned business in Rutherglen, North East Victoria, dating back to 1875, with approximately 40 hectares under vine. Its winemaking facilities utilise not only the modern technology of stainless steel and cool fermentation techniques but also the traditional method of open vat fermentation, thus maintaining over one hundred years and six generations of winemaking experience and skill in the production of quality Rutherglen wine. This sweet fortified wine is made the varietal Muscat a Petit Grain Rouge (more commonly known as Rutherglen Brown Muscat). The grapes are left to mature on the vines for longer than most other varieties, so that they become very ripe and sweet. They are then picked, crushed and the juice and skins fermented together in fermenting tanks for one to five days. Only a small amount of the natural grape sugar is fermented to alcohol before the juice is drained from the tank, the skins are pressed and all the juice blended together. The wine then has distilled grape spirit added to it to bring the alcohol level to about 17-18%. The wine is then placed in 2,500 litre wooden barrels, and some smaller barrels, for five years to mature. Young, fresh and vibrant, this Muscat has lovely floral tones of crushed rose petal, lavender and orange blossom. This wine has the rich raisin and nutty characteristics typical of the style.
