Tapiz is a 100% family business, started 10 years ago with a clear mission: to produce the best wines and olive oils possible, protect the environment and preserve regional culture. They say ‘terroir defines us, and our products are our finest expression of this identity’. They are advised by a world leader in the art of the elegance of the wines: Jean-Claude Berrouet, winemaker for more than 30 years of Chateau Petrus, Bordeaux. They have eight vineyards in the best wine areas, and make wines with the specific characteristics of each region.
Winemaker Fabián Valenzuela has more than 25 years of experience as a winemaker, he comes from a family with a long history of making wine in Mendoza and ‘grew up among vineyards’. He defines himself as a winemaker who aims for the best quality possible, taking care of each terroir expression. He has worked in France, Spain and the USA in different vintages achieving more experience and understanding of the wine regions.
The Bonarda grape comes from the Alto Agrelo area of Mendoza, at 1,030 meters above sea level (3,379 feet). This area is characterised by high winds that help the health of the grapes. Tapiz Bonarda is a true expression of a classic Mendoza Bonarda – with good body and pronounced red fruit.
Tapiz wines are made with grapes from the Uco Valley. The heights of these vineyards range from 1,000 to 1,350 meters and are characterised by being elegant and full-bodied, with great aromatic complexity and rounded, smooth, ever-present tannins and great ageing potential.
Cold pre-maceration takes place at 8C for five days to extract colour and aromas. The must is then fermented in stainless steel tanks at 28ºC before undergoing 100% malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for eight months in French and American oak barrels of second and third use.
The wine is an intense red colour with violet hues and has fresh aromas of raspberries and strawberries. In the mouth, the tannins are ripe and sweet and has an elegant and soft finish.
