The Oddbins Take

Hungary is an unusual land famous for its paprika, extreme moustaches, turbulent history, water polo and melancholy. Its residents, the mighty Magyar, describe the worst place in the world as being “under a frog’s bum down a coal mine”. But we think that this Hungarian wine is so tasty that if you had a bottle of it with you, you could probably endure a pretty lengthy stay at the bottom of the dankest of pits beneath a sizeable and warty amphibian, without it seeming like too much of a hardship!

Louis XIV described sweet Tokaji from Hungary as “the king of wines and the wine of kings”, it was the first wine to be protected by law and it features in the Hungarian national anthem. But dry Tokaji is less well known. Furmint is one of the main grape varieties used in sweet Tokaji, but also produces some rather lovely dry wines like this wonderfully distinctive one.
