The Oddbins Take

If you’re a grape, looking for an ideal home, it’s a case of location location location. The best locations will suit your climate-, altitude- and soil-based needs and be blessed with talented winemakers who know who understand you. The Riesling grapes in the Awatere Valley, NZ, have the ideal neighbourhood: they have lots of sunshine but particularly cool nights, so they don’t get too hot, which means that have time to develop complex flavours of ripe limes and grapefruit with riverbed freshness. Proof that it’s worth hunting before putting down roots…

Tupari is a family-run wine estate on north-facing river flats overlooking the Awatere (pronounced: ‘Ow–wa–terry’) River, led by meticulous vigneron David Turnbull and renowned local winemaker Glenn Thomas, who was the first winemaker for Vavasour. The wines carry New Zealand Wine Growers’ sustainability accreditation.

The Tupari Riesling block is situated on a thin terrace stretching along the top of the cliff face with magnificent valley views. Warm days and cool nights combined to create this wine’s distinguishing mineral character and rich flavours typical of the Awatere Valley. Following harvest in the cool of the night, the gently pressed juice was carefully fermented and the process suspended with only a few grams of sugar remaining.

"Pale straw in colour, with green tints, this dry Riesling has bright citrus aromas of sweet lime and a touch of spice and elderflower. The palate has classic Riesling flavours of ripe limes and grapefruit. The wine has mineral notes and ripe fruit, with well-balanced acidity and a fresh, crisp finish. "

A definitive food wine and ideal companion for freshly shucked oysters, tempura or grilled fish.
